Warren County's chapter of Hunters Helping Kids (HHK) may still be in the organizational phase, but it has already had its first success story, thanks in large part to a series of circumstances that began with the purchase of a raffle ticket.
Back in June, a number of local residents attended an HHK banquet in Edenton. Among them was Warren County HHK and Embro Hunting Club member Blaine Reese, who happened to buy a raffle ticket for an all-expense paid trip to Oklahoma. He won and went on his trip recently. "The regional director (of HHK) for the state went, too," Reese said. "While we were there, the regional director got a call from the founder of the organization. 'A child from High Point wants to go deer hunting.' "
HHK aims to provide hunting activities for children and youth who have no one to hunt with or nowhere to hunt. The organization is designed to assist children of all ages and abilities while educating them about the outdoors and gun safety. Some of these youth are facing life-threatening illnesses, while others are healthy.
The group's Warren County Chapter was just formed in September, but, as soon as he heard about the phone call, Reese saw an opportunity.
"I said (to the regional director), 'give me the phone number. I will call,' " he said. Reese called the High Point family on Dec. 3, and the youth, 16-year-old Glenn Heer, and his father, arrived in Warren County four days later.
For Glenn, who has an immune deficiency, the trip was especially meaningful. His older sister died at the age of 5 1/2 from the same medical condition that he is fighting now. This past weekend, Glenn had the kind of success that most hunters only dream about.
The Embro Hunting Club and the Warren County HHK chapter outfitted the teen with all of the hunting gear he needed, and during a club still hunt on Friday, Glenn bagged a cowhorn, a two-point deer.
The next day, Glenn and his Warren County friends went hunting with dogs, and he killed an eight-pointer. That afternoon, he bagged a doe.
On Sunday morning, Glenn went fishing in Kerr Lake at Clarksville, Va. and caught a striped bass.
